Cleantechs seek strong leaders
Australia: 13 March 2008: Bespoke executive recruiters Friday Search have moved into their sixth year with a focus on the cleantech industry.
“The recruitment of suitable people was named as a key challenge to growth by presenters at the fourth AustralAsian Cleantech Forum in Melbourne earlier this week,” said Bruce Handmer, who heads up North Sydney based Friday Search.
“Startups and takeoffs looking for funding realise that investors are as interested in the credentials of their management teams as they are in the nitty gritty details of new technologies.”
Gaining strength in the US and Europe, where the health of the clean energy, air, water and waste sector has been boosted by class actions and legislation, cleantech is also taking off in Australia.
“One of our cleantech clients, which started as a small Australian-based company, recently received backing from US investors,” Mr Handmer said. “The company is now based in California, where we are recruiting for operations in the US as well as Australia.”
New Energy Finance UK Director Chris Greenwood told the forum it is estimated that in 2007, US$148 billion went into global investments in clean energy. “A third went into companies, including start-ups, with forecasts for 2008 of continuing growth,” Mr Greenwood said.
Mr Handmer is optimistic about cleantech. In two decades of executive recruitment and management, he has recruited for clients across all sectors, including numerous startups and takeoffs.
“Cleantech is the future,” Mr Handmer said. “Australians are recognised world wide as leaders in efficient innovation, and it is no different for our cleantech players.”
